Communications 2000

Assignment #8 - Planning for Improvement
Friday, December 10, 1999

On the reverse side of this sheet is your grade summary for the 2nd quarter through yesterday (December 9, 1999). The overall percentage and letter grades you’ve earned so far are circled in red ink. You will use information from this summary to complete the assignments below.

If your overall letter grade is below a C-, you need to show improvement by next Friday (December 17). Should your overall percentage through December 16 not improve, I will drop you from the class for the balance of this semester. Similarly, if your grade is currently a C- or higher and it falls below a C-, I will drop you for the balance of the semester too. Should you be dropped, you will report to Gloria for Communications class periods to perform whatever tasks she designates.

The way to improve your grade is to make certain that you complete your assignments (starting with those below) carefully, thoughtfully, and completely; and that you submit them on time. Additionally, you’ll need to monitor your behavior in class to insure that you are attentive and focused throughout each class period. Should I have to remind you to stop talking, pay attention, be courteous, or the like, you can be certain that your behavior is not helping your grade.

General Instructions

Prepare parts 1 and 2 on separate sheets of paper, each headed with your name, the class name, the due date and the assignment number. Proofread your work for legibility, conciseness, spelling, punctuation, capitalization and completeness. I will return Part 1 to you on Tuesday, December 14. Use it to improve your work in Part 2.

Part 1 – Due Monday, December 13, 1999

    1. Write out your overall percentage and letter grades as of Thursday, December 9, 1999.
    2. Write out the 1st grade component that I have highlighted in green. Next to it, write out the percentage and letter grade equivalent you’ve earned for that component.
    3. Based on the information in the initial class handouts #1 (Expectations) and #2 (Grading Policy), list those things on which you need to work in order to improve your grade in this component. Number each component you list. Beneath each task you identify, indent a list of the specific things you need to do in order to successfully complete that task. These specific things must be unambiguous and easily observable. Saying that you will turn your homework in on time does not tell me how you plan to do it. Sitting down with your parent(s) the night before an assignment is due to create a written checklist of those items you need in your binder when you leave for school, might be one. Identifying a specific time period in which to work on the assignment, might be a second. Actually going over the checklist with your parent(s) before you walk out the door the next morning to make certain you have everything on it, might be a third.

Part 2 – Due Wednesday, December 15, 1999

The instructions for Part 2 are the same as those for Part 1. However use the second highlighted component to complete numbers 2 and 3. If you have only one component highlighted, you need do nothing for part 2.
